Reuters interviews CaoCao CEO Gong Xin: Robotaxi costs will undercut private cars

Reuters recently interviewed CaoCao CEO Gong Xin during Auto China 2026 in Beijing. In the interview, Gong disclosed for the first time details on the cost profile and mass-production rollout schedule of Eva Cab, China’s leading purpose-built Robotaxi, and shared his forward-looking views on the industry landscape.

Eva Cab, which made its debut at Auto China 2026, is a strategic Robotaxi model. CaoCao was deeply involved in its product definition and R&D. It draws on the company’s proven experience with its existing purpose-built vehicles in significantly reducing vehicle TCO (total cost of ownership). Gong said Eva Cab reconfigures cabin space, optimizes storage design, and simplifies luxury interior features and high-power motors that matter more in private cars than in shared mobility scenarios. As large-scale operations advance, he said, the cost of CaoCao’s Robotaxi vehicles will eventually fall below that of private cars.

By contrast, most Robotaxis currently in public deployment are typically adapted from private cars designed for the mass market, limiting cabin optimization and large-scale cost control.

Eva Cab brings together Geely’s deep capabilities in the R&D and manufacturing of intelligent electric vehicles, the G-ASD L4 autonomous driving solution, and CaoCao’s decade of operational and service insights in shared mobility. It was developed from the ground up specifically for Robotaxi operations.

In terms of commercial deployment, CaoCao will leverage Geely Holding’s global strategy to accelerate the large-scale rollout of Robotaxi services worldwide. Gong said Eva Cab will enter mass production and begin deliveries in 2027, with initial operations to launch in Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and five cities in mainland China, targeting deployment of several thousand vehicles. Large-scale deliveries and deployment will begin in 2028, with cumulative deployment reaching 100,000 vehicles by 2030.

As Geely Holding Group’s primary commercial platform for Robotaxi operations, CaoCao has established a full-capability, closed-loop Robotaxi ecosystem centered on intelligent purpose-built vehicles, intelligent driving technologies and intelligent operations. Over the past decade, the company has built deep expertise in the shared mobility market, supported by vast mobility data, mature dispatch algorithms, and a nationwide service network. It has also developed an asset management system covering vehicle procurement, insurance, maintenance, and residual value management, laying a solid foundation for the commercial deployment of Robotaxi services.

This year, CaoCao will gradually expand into more cities across China, continue enlarging its Robotaxi fleet, explore Robotaxi business opportunities in Hong Kong, and deploy Robotaxi services in international markets. Leveraging Geely Holding Group’s global network, CaoCao aims to rapidly establish a presence in suitable markets.
